There are currently multiple ways that a makerspace would help a school meet state standards.Currently, Rhode Island is one of the 42 states that uses the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
Due to their broad focus it is incredibly easy to meet both ELA and Math standards through planning and focusing on design thinking and STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). |
These potential Common Core standards could be met with your space:
College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading
|
College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Writing
|
College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Speaking/Listening
|
Standards for Mathematical Practice
|
And even more, makerspaces that include coding can help schools met the current state educational initiatives. In the case of Rhode Island that current state educational initiative is Computer Science for Rhode Island (CS4RI). CS4RI was created to solve a growing problem in Rhode Island education which is that there are not enough students K-20 engage in community science, which will heavily affect our economy and job growth in the state.
"Creating a talented and diverse pipeline of students with computer science (CS) expertise is critical to our economic future. Rhode Island’s IT industry is a leading force in our economy, and STEAM and IT jobs are among our fastest growing positions. We need to develop a workforce with the skills necessary to fill these high – wage, high – growth jobs...To increase our computer science options across all grades, we must engage community partners and resources and support schools and teachers in expanding their offerings" (CS4RI, "Why?," 2016). CS4RI's three main foci are to build skills, create opportunity, and make RI competitive and their goal is to have CS taught in every public school by December 2017.
By creating a makerspace with these issues in mind, you are not only creating a space that meets CCSS, but also a place that meets the current and future needs of the state. This just demonstrates how important these spaces are for the future of our students! |
